The winter season brings tons of fun to the Oklahoma City area. Between kids being out of school for winter break and cold weather lingering long into the New Year, we know parents are searching high and low for ways to keep kids entertained. We want to help you do it all on a budget, so we’ve outlined 50 fabulous ways to stay busy this season all for $5 or less! Looking for more family fun?   1. Take a spin on Mo’s Carousel open at Myriad Gardens through the end of the year. Running Wednesday – Sunday, rides are $2, except on Sundays when families can ride for FREE.
  2. Explore the city aboard the new OKC Streetcar. Rides are FREE until Jan. 5.
  3. Dec. 19 – 20: Drop in for fun at Myriad Gardens. Enjoy story time, crafts and interactive educational activities during their December Drop-ins. 10 a.m. – noon
  4. Jan. 4 – 6: Eagle Watch at Arcadia Lake (900 E 2nd St, Edmond). See majestic eagles in their natural habitat. Begin at the Arcadia Lake Park office for information about where the eagles can be spotted and check out the raptor wingspan display. Dress warmly and bring binoculars. $3 per vehicle. 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  5. Stick with those get-healthy resolutions at Tot Town’s weekly Mommy & Me Yoga on Saturdays. Kids can try poses or play while moms enjoy the yoga. 10 – 10:30 a.m.
  6. Jan. 5: Western weather can be wild! Tornadoes, hail, blizzards, and extreme temperatures are just a few of the elements that impact humans and animals living there. Learn about Western weather with fun activities at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s FREE Saturdays for Kids event. 10 a.m. – noon
  7. Go explore a local shop! Here are some of our favorites. Allow your kids to explore new spaces and don’t feel pressure to buy anything new!
  8. Jan. 5: FREE Diaper Dash Baby Crawl & Toddler Trot at the Yukon Community Center (2200 S Holly Ave, Yukon). Babies 6-14 months compete to see who can crawl a set distance in a timed event. Toddlers trot to see which baby can walk the fastest. Prizes awarded in three categories. 10:30 a.m. – noon.
  9. Jan. 5: FREE Eagle Watch at Lake Thunderbird State Park (1201 Clear Bay Ave, Norman) features an information session and a tour of the park to catch a glimpse of magnificent eagles in their winter home. Preregister. Be sure to bring your binoculars and dress appropriately. 1 p.m. Also held: Jan. 19.
  10. Whether or not snow is falling outside, your kids will love creating these homemade icicles
  11. Jan. 8: Make your own winter-themed snow globe at the Midwest City Library’s FREE Make and Take. 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.
  12. Jan. 11: FREE LIVE on the Plaza in the Plaza District (1700 block of NW 16th St). Businesses stay open late with featured artists, live music, special events, local shopping and more. 7 to 11 p.m.
  13. Try out this exciting science experiment about floating!
  14. Jan. 12: Conduct experiments, discover the science of sound, learn coding and more at a FREE Steam Saturday at St. Mary’s Episcopal School. The event is open to the public. 9:30 – 11 a.m.
  15. Jan. 12: FREE See You Saturdays at the Oklahoma Hall of Fame (1400 Classen Dr) features special activities for the whole family including themed experiences, learning opportunities and crafts. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  16. Go to your local library and find some fun books to read aloud at home.
  17. We rounded up 10 kid-friendly day trips to take out of Oklahoma City. Besides the money for gas, it’s possible to pack up some snacks and see many of these sights without spending a dime.
  18. Jan. 12: FREE Second Saturday: Make + Take at Oklahoma Contemporary (3000 General Pershing Blvd) features a family art-making project inspired by works of art on view at the museum.. Projects are designed to be accessible and fun for visitors of all ages and all levels of art-making experience. All children must be accompanied by an adult. 1 – 4 p.m.
  19. Embrace the great outdoors by heading to one of these top spots for exploring nature in OKC. Find some tips for heading outdoors with little ones here.
  20. Rent a movie, make this festive popcorn and just have a night in!
  21. A perfect indoor activity on a cold winter day is to visit a story time. They happen regularly all over the OKC metro and we’ve listed several here.

  23. Jan. 15: FREE Art Adventures at Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art  (555 Elm Ave, Norman) features a themed story time and correlating craft project for kids ages 3 – 5 with an adult. 10:30 a.m.
  24. Jan. 18 – 20: Explore fine jewelry, beads, pearls, minerals and more at the Oklahoma Winter Bead & Jewelry Show at State Fair Park.
  25. You probably have all the ingredients on hand already to make homemade ice cream in a bag. Teach your kids a science lesson while you do it!
  26. Jan. 19: Compete for prizes at the Downtown Library’s FREE Retro Video Game Tournament. 1 – 3 p.m.
  27. Jan. 21: FREE Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration at various locations across Oklahoma City celebrates the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a parade, silent march, bell ringing ceremony and more. The festivities begin and end at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral (127 NW 7th St). 9 a.m.
  28. Find a fun library event. Many of the events at Oklahoma City’s libraries are totally free and great for keeping kids entertained.
  29. Call up some friends and head to a park for a playdate!
  30. Jan. 24: Enjoy some time together at the FREE Family Game Night at The Station at Central Park. 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.
  31. Winter weather makes us even more aware of the usefulness of insulation. Teach your kids more about the science behind insulated mugs and even homes with this fun experiment.
  32. Visit an Oklahoma State Park! Not only are they free to enter, but the family could easily spend hours exploring nature and learning more about Oklahoma wildlife.
  33. Jan. 28: Challenge your mind and escape the Northwest Library. Kids ages 12 & up can use clues and solve puzzles to see if they can escape before the time runs out.
  34. Winter is the perfect time to bring the learning indoors. We’ve got you covered with this simple science experiment to teach your kids about surface tension.
  35. Whether the weather is rainy or not, this list of rainy-day activities offers plenty of ideas for fun.
  36. Jan. 29: Enjoy the classics like Space Jam on the big screen at Harkins Theatre’s Tuesday Night Classics. 7 p.m.
  37. Enter our contests! It just takes a second and you could win big!
  38. Feb. 2: Bundle up and spend some time outside together. Oklahoma City offers FREE Fishing Days on the first Saturday of each month.
  39. Volunteer! Check out our list of family volunteer opportunities and take time to give back.
  40. Feb. 7: Explore the winter season at Myriad Garden’s FREE Reading Wednesdays. Each week offers a nature-themed story time and related craft. 10 – 11 a.m.
  41. Feb. 8: FREE Night to Shine Prom at Putnam City Baptist Church (11401 N Rockwell Ave) features an unforgettable prom night experience for people with special needs, ages 16 and older, including hair and makeup stations, a karaoke room and, of course, dancing. Parents and guardians can enjoy a special night of their own. Preregister, space is limited.
  42. Feb. 9 & 10: Test your court skills at the FREE Jr. NBA Skills Challenge at Cox Convention Center. Boys & girls under the age of 13 can compete for prizes and the chance to qualify for Regionals in Dallas, TX.
  43. Feb. 12: Learn about Oklahoma’s First Lady of the Blues, Dorothy Ellis, with a performance by Rhythmically Speaking at the Warr Acres Library. 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
  44. Feb. 13: Make a gift for your special someone! The Norman West Library is hosting a FREE DIY Mug Craft for kids 12 & up. 5 – 6 p.m.
  45. Got some extra soda cans around the house? Take this opportunity to teach kids about air pressure with this fun and simple science experiment!
  46. Feb. 16: Enjoy the sweet serenades of the Putnam City School District’s strolling orchestras during their annual Silver Strings Concert at the Bethany Library. 2 – 3 p.m.
  47. Feb. 21: Take part in some friendly competition at the FREE Ping Pong Mania at The Station at Central Park. 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.
  48. March 2: Kids can throw in a line and compete for prizes during the FREE Kids’ Trout Fish Out in Yukon. 8 – 11 a.m.
  49. March 2: Watch as fun characters and floats parade down Main Street for the FREE Norman Mardi Gras Parade. 7 – 9 p.m.
  50. Gear up for spring with a whole new wardrobe. Find plenty of free consignment sales (which are loaded with cheap clothing) on this list of consignment sales happening throughout the OKC metro.
